Alternative models of climate finance

This module leads participants through a discussion of what role finance should play in addressing climate change – according to what principles – and what socially useful finance and investment could look like. Drawing from previous modules, it will briefly revisit discussion how much finance is needed, what it is needed for, where it could come from, and the strengths and weaknesses of public and private sector finance. We will then turn to existing alternative economic models and policy regimes for financing development (commons management, cooperative business models, municipal participatory budgeting, rights of nature, public sector pension fund investment, socially responsible investment, etc.) that operate at small and large scales, explore their impacts on local action and local/state policy and the implications for climate change.
